(IEA Trust for R&D)
The
Indian Economic Association had organized
the World Economic Congress, in 1986, in
collaboration with the International
Economic Association. This major event was
attended by more than 3500 delegates from
all over the world. The IEA has had the
privilege of making this mega event a grand
success.
An event of this magnitude required huge
resources. The IEA had mobilized the
resources from different sources, such as,
Government of India, Reserve Bank of India,
Various Banks, Commercial Organizations and
also State Government Sources.
A National level Steering Committee headed
by Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then Deputy
Chairman, Planning Commission, and
consisting of several members, such as,
Professor S. Chakravarty, Professor
P. R. Brahmananda, Professor Gautam Mathur,
Professor M. V. Mathur, Professor Ruddar Datt,
Professor, V. R. Panchamukhi (Convenor), among
others, steered the organization of this
Mega event. In view of the careful handling
of all the aspects of the World Economic
Conference, some surplus of the Resources
was generated and the Indian Economic
Association decided to set up a separate
registered Body called "The Indian Economic
Association Trust for Research and
Development". The basic objective of the IEA
Trust for R&D is to provide support for
those activities that help in promoting
quality and standard of teaching and
research in the economic profession of the
country.
The Trust was registered in 1987. Professor
Sukhamoy Chakravarty, former President,
Indian Economic Association, was the first
Chairman of the IEA Trust for Research and
Development. Dr. Manmohan Singh, former
President, Indian Economic Association was
chairman of the Trust from 1991 to 2005. Dr.
V. R. Panchamukhi, former President, Indian
Economic Association was the Managing
Trustee of the Trust during the period, 1987
to 2005.
The Trust evolved
its programme of providing support to the
following types of activities:

Themes of interest to the Teaching and
Research profession and distributing them at
concessional rates with focus on demand in
the mofussil areas;.

contemporary relevance and bringing out

Economics.
Resources of the Trust are meager in
relation to the magnitude of the Challenges
before it.
